Synthesis and reactivity of unsaturated silicon ring and cluster compounds

In this short lecture, the two research projects of the Lips working group will be presented. In the first project the synthesis, characterization and reactivity of an amido-substituted bicyclic silicon ring compound 1 with zwitterionic character is presented [1]. This compound reacts with chalcogens to form novel silicon-chalcogen cage compounds with unusual structural motifs and properties.

In the second research project of the Lips group, NHC-coordinated silicon ring compounds with unsaturated silicon atoms are presented and the reactivity of these compounds with small molecules such as azides, alkynes, isocyanides and boranes is explained [2]. In these experiments it was found that the NHC-coordinated silicon ring compound has silylene-like reactivity and partially reacts with ring expansion.

Curriculum Vitae of Dr. Felicitas Lips

Miss Dr. Felicitas Lips studied chemistry in Marburg and Rennes (France). She did her diploma thesis in inorganic chemistry on the subject of water-soluble multinary chalcogenidostannates at the Philipps University of Marburg. She then did her doctorate under the supervision of Prof. S. Dehnen on experimental and quantum chemical investigations on binary Zintl anions of groups 14 and 15 and on ternary intermetalloid clusters at the Philipps University of Marburg.

For her postdoctoral research, she moved to the University of California Davis, where she researched low-coordinated organosilicon compounds together with Prof. PP Power.

Since October 2014 she has been a junior research group leader in the environment of Prof. W. Uhl at the Institute for Inorganic Chemistry. Her current research area is the synthesis and reactivity of unsaturated silicon ring and cluster compounds.
