Who we are - What we do

Electrochemistry – an important cross-discipline

The GDCh Division of Electrochemistry has been active since 1960 and has almost 700 members from universities, research institutes and industry - 40% of whom are students and young members. The Division aims to promote all areas of electrochemistry from the basics to application.

Electrochemistry deals with all processes that take place at the phase boundary between an ionically conductive and another conductive phase. It plays an important role in many applications and basic research in various disciplines. In particular, it offers numerous solutions and opportunities for the challenges of sustainable and efficient chemistry. Selected examples are:

  • Electrosynthesis: production of chlorine, aluminum, copper and organic chemicals; sustainable hydrogen production and CO 2 conversion; Creation of layer systems and nanostructures
  • Energy storage and conversion: lithium-ion and redox flow batteries, polymer electrolyte and solid oxide fuel cells
  • Analytics and sensors: Electrochemical in-situ, ex-situ and in-vivo investigation methods, environmental technology, medical technology and industrial applications
  • Biochemistry: metabolism and nerve conduction, medical surveillance sensors, biotechnological applications
  • Electroplating: Surface finishing and functionalization, metallization of computer chips, coating of semiconductor structures as well as electronic, decorative and functional components
  • Corrosion protection: protective and sacrificial layers, inhibitors, passivation

Map of Electrochemistry

Where in Germany is research and production carried out in the field of Electrochemistry ? This leads to the Electrochemistry map, which lists companies and work groups at universities, technical colleges and non-university research institutions that deal with research, development and / or production in the field of Electrochemistry . Even if the focus is on Germany, companies and working groups based abroad are cordially invited to participate.

Specialist group meetings

Annual meetings take place in odd years as part of the GDCh Science Forum. In even years, the division organizes the international " Electrochemistry " conference with the participation of several other societies.

Promotion of young talent

The division annually awards a sponsorship award and grants for active participation in conferences (poster / lecture).
