Supramolecular Chemistry

Who we are - What we do

The Working Group on Supramolecular Chemistry was founded on March 18, 2025, during the Chemiedozententagung in Braunschweig and is the newest GDCh structure within the German Chemical Society (GDCh). Supramolecular chemistry is an interdisciplinary field of research that spans organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry, extending to the life and materials science , and has a long tradition in Germany. The field has gained considerable importance in the last two decades – evidenced by the establishment of numerous research consortia and the great success of the SupraChem Conferences, which have grown steadily since their inception in 2011; SupraChem 2024 already recorded 330 participants.

GDCh members of all disciplines and experience levels are cordially invited to join the Working Group. Membership is free for students.

Our goal is to promote science and research through

  • Exchange of information and experience across disciplines
  • Collaboration with other GDCh Divisions and our European sister organizations
  • Supporting the next generation of supramolecular chemists
  • Promoting the application of supramolecular research in industry
  • Recognition of outstanding achievements in teaching and research in supramolecular chemistry

We pursue this goal, among other things, through

  • Hosting the SupraChem Conferences (2026 at TU Dortmund University)
  • Support for national and international networking activities
  • Awarding of prizes (to be determined)
  • Participation in the GDCh's continuing education program (GDCh.academy)
