Supramolecular Chemistry

Who we are - What we do

The Supramolecular Chemistry Working Group was founded on March 18, 2025, as part of the Chemiedozententagung in Braunschweig and is the newest GDCh structure within the German Chemical Society (GDCh). Supramolecular chemistry is an interdisciplinary research field that spans organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry, as well as life and materials science , and has a long tradition in Germany. The research field has gained considerable importance over the past two decades—as evidenced by the establishment of numerous research alliances and the tremendous success of the "SupraChem"Conferences, which have grown steadily since their inception in 2011; SupraChem 2024 already welcomed 330 participants.

GDCh members of all disciplines and experience levels are cordially invited to join the Working Group. Membership is free in 2025; it will remain free for GDCh student members beyond that time.

Our goal is to promote science and research through

  • Exchange of information and experience across disciplines
  • Cooperation with other GDCh Divisions and our European sister organizations
  • Supporting the next generation of supramolecular chemists
  • Promoting the application of supramolecular research in industry
  • Recognition of outstanding achievements in teaching and research on supramolecular chemistry

We pursue this goal through, among other things,

  • Hosting the SupraChem Conferences (2026 at TU Dortmund University)
  • Support for national and international networking activities
  • Awards ceremony (to be determined)
  • Participation in the GDCh continuing education program (GDCh.academy)

Founding team: Pol Besenius (Mainz), Angela Casini (Munich), Guido Clever (Dortmund), Larissa von Krbek (Bonn), Michael Mastalerz (Heidelberg), Anna McConnell (Siegen), Jochen Niemeyer (Duisburg-Essen), Babis Pappas (Freiburg), Max von Delius (Ulm), Frank Würthner (Würzburg)
