Report from the chemical assessment working group Group

The working group chemical assessment met on 16/06/21 to an Online-Meeting. The main topic was concepts for assessing the sustainability of the use of chemicals, which were presented in two lectures. First, Dr. Silke Gabbert from RIVM in Bilthoven (NL) the concept of "Essential Use" in the European chemicals strategy for sustainability with first glimpses of challenges and opportunities. In doing so, she dealt in particular with the necessary definitions and criteria for determining "essential use", for example of chemical substances per se as well as in products. Then Janna Kuhlmann from BUND (previously EPEA) explained the Cradle to Cradle concept for chemical assessment for the circular economy. The C2C certification of products is graded (bronze to platinum) for the absence of certain substances of concern (restricted substances list) and hazards according to GHS / CLP.

The questions posed by the 18 participants dealt, among other things, with the practical feasibility of the concepts under various ordinances and guidelines, for example for biocides and pesticides or electronic scrap. Aspects relating to the assessment of the sustainability of supply chains and contributions to the EU's Zero Pollution Ambition were also deepened. More AK chemical assessment

Reports of the AK chairmen at the 2020 general meeting

At the virtual general meeting of the Division on October 2, 2020 (see Mitt Umweltchem Kotox 4/2020 ), the AK chairmen informed about their work in 2020.

  1. atmospheric chemistry (Prof. Dr. Peter Wiesen)
Mr. Wiesen presented the activities of the last meetings. The last meeting was held together with the Fine Dust Working Committee and the Joint Committee on Chemistry, Air Quality and Climate (CLK). Discussions included the influence of lockdown on air quality and the spread of viruses through the air. More AK atmospheric chemistry
  2. soil (Dr. Dieter Hennecke)
The AK soil is currently dealing with the subject of PAH in Bödent, and a face-to-face workshop is planned for this.
    More AK soil
  3. chemical assessment (Prof. Dr. Adolf Eisenträger)
Mr. Eisträger introduces the AK, which meets twice a year. The topics are selected by the members themselves and, if necessary, external speakers are invited. The last time it was about monitoring compliance with the requirements of the REACH regulation in the federal states. More AK chemical assessment
  4. environmental monitoring (Dr. Heinz Rüdel)
The AK is led by three people. Sessions take place with several speakers on a key topic, e.g. mercury monitoring in terrestrial ecosystems. Phosphonates in the aquatic environment, EU project on chemicals in predators and their prey. More working group environmental monitoring
