The 3rd ChemSlam of the GDCh took place as part of the GDCh Science Forum Chemistry in Aachen on September 16, 2019. Around 250 spectators, including students invited by the GDCh, listened to lectures on various fields of chemistry for almost two hours. Six scientists showed that chemistry has more to do with magic than you think, that nerds can also be princes of dreams and how much chemistry can contribute to protecting our environment and the climate.
Like the first two ChemSlams, the event was organized by the ?Chemistry is?? working group, led by Maren Mielck (GDCh) and Wolfgang Gerhartz; they were supported by a team of Aachen young chemists led by Eric Siemes. The slam was moderated by Adi Klaming, a retired math teacher from Aachen. Adi is also a magician and framed the slam with some magic tricks. The individual lectures were filmed. All videos can be seen on the ?Chemie ist GDCh? YouTube channel (individual links below). The short version shows the event in just under 20 minutes.
The audience voted for the winners with applause. Marlene Böldl was able to prevail with her slam on bio-plastic and was awarded the title Dr. chem. slam. to back up. Philipp Spitzer was delighted with second place, while Lucy Dittrich took third place.
All slammers received a plush Erlenmeyer, a gift from the GDCh. The winners of places 1, 2 and 3 could look forward to book vouchers for ? 300, ? 200 or ? 100, a donation from Evonik AG. In addition, the winner of the slam received an antique glass retort, lovingly mirrored by the Aachen team, a donation from Prof. Richard Göttlich from Gießen.
Conclusion: a successful, well-rounded event: exciting, instructive and funny (thanks to the excellent moderator). So we can look forward to the 4th ChemSlam of the GDCh on the occasion of the GDCh Science Forum 2021 in Munich.
