2. ChemSlam

2. GDCh-ChemSlam in Berlin

The 2nd GDCh-ChemSlam took place as part of the GDCh-Science Forum Chemistry in Berlin on September 11, 2017 on the student day. Around 300 students invited by the GDCh listened to nine 7-minute lectures on various fields of chemistry for almost two hours.

The organization

As in Dresden at the time, the event was organized by the "Chemistry is ..." working group . Frauke Kirsch from this working group put together a team of young chemists and young food chemists in Berlin to organize the tender and the local processes. Wolfgang Gerhartz coordinated the project. The proven team of Timo Raddatz and Samuel Fink moderated the slam. Gerhard Kreysa professionally filmed the event. All films can be seen on the "Chemie ist GDCh" YouTube channel (web links below). A short version shows the two-hour event in 19 minutes.

The slammers and their subjects

  • Amitabh Banerji: "Phantastic Plastic - organic light-emitting diodes (OLED)" (Slam out of competition)
  • Martin R. Lichtenthaler: "Dreams made of salt -" naked "cations
  • Stefanie Hild: "Biofuel cells - or how the quiet place is lit up"
  • Carolina Walker: "Trojan nanophores - biodegradable core multi-shell nanocarriers for stimulus-responsive drug delivery"
  • Peter Heinzerling: "Nanotechnology - ancient, simple, cutting-edge" with clear experiments
  • Anna Mechler: "The Magic of Energy Conversion - Splitting Water, Fuel Cell"
  • Marie Westphal: "Chemistry is super cool - transformation, sustainability, digitization of chemistry"
  • Eric Siemes: "A journey into the world of the (in) visible - UV light and the effects of sun cream
  • Simon Krause: "Contraintuitive Phenomena - Unexpected Results in the Absorption of Molecules on Organometallic Frameworks (MOFs)

The winners

The audience decided on the three winners of the slam with the strength of their applause. The brilliant winner was Martin R. Lichtenthaler. Peter Heinzerling got the second strongest applause, and Eric Siemes came third. The winners received (thanks to Evonik) book vouchers and the new GDCh book "Unendliche Weiten". As a trophy, the winners were also able to take home a work of art made of glass, a model of a special molecule ( Jesse Holloway ). The consolation prize was a GDCh T-shirt with the imprint "Chemists have a solution for everything". The winners were also almost three hundred students from the audience, who were able to take away many new impressions of chemistry after two exciting hours.

The feedback from the participants

We asked the teachers accompanying the students online about their satisfaction with the ChemSlam. We asked about the organization, format, duration, topics and suitability of the event for the students. Almost all questions were answered with school grades 1 and 2; The school grade 3 was awarded only once. All respondents stated that they would attend this event again.
