Research, development, manufacture and sale of goods have decisively improved our lives in the last century and especially in the last few decades. Success in all areas, be it with the new medicines, the new plastics, agrochemicals, paints and varnishes, fibers through to the new issues of biotechnological production, would not have been possible without the appropriate commercial legal protection. The core work of the GDCh Division, which was founded in 1949, is the promotion of members working in the fields of patent law, commercial legal protection and patent issues. Working conferences, seminars and colloquia serve this purpose.
The former Division "industrial property protection " was renamed the Division "patent law " on November 11th, 2019 - legitimized by the General Assembly meeting and after the stock decision of the GDCh board on March 18th, 2019. The reason is, on the one hand, that the German term " industrial property protection" is hardly ever used in specialist circles. On the other hand, there are no chemical-specific aspects to be considered on the side of non-technical property rights, such as trademarks, so that the Division is almost exclusively concerned with technical property rights. Here, the term "patent" is often used as a synonym for the entire type of protective right and is an established term, especially in inventor circles.
The Division is valued as an educational forum for patent law, as a forum for exchanging experiences on patent issues, legislation, case law and official practice. Specialization days and workshops have made a particular contribution to this since its introduction in 1983.
Very many chemists who leave the university are not or only little informed about patent law . That is why experts from the Division impart the appropriate tools and basic knowledge for working in commercial legal protection in seminars and lectures for chemists and natural scientists.
It is the express goal of the board of directors to provide chemists with the relevant patent law fundamentals at other colleges and universities, emphasizing the chemistry aspect.
