Who we are – What we do

The significance of water — the elixir of life — hardly needs to be emphasized today. As one of the most important global raw materials, water is sometimes even declared to be the “blue gold” of the 21st century. Its protection, processing, quality control, utilization and management are central societal tasks of global importance.

Water Chemistry
The discipline of water chemistry deals with:

  • All areas of the water cycle;
  • Methods of water analysis;
  • Use and processing of various untreated waters for their utilization as drinking-, process-, bath-, mineral- and healing water;
  • Chemical properties of water, its components and the conversions in water or via water as well as the matter balance of water bodies;
  • Treatment of used waters prior to re-entry into the natural circulation.

The Water Chemistry Society

The Water Chemistry Society, with around 1,000 members, pursues the following mission:

  • To serve as a network for knowledge of water by supporting the exchange of ideas and experiences through its own conferences and publications;
  • To act as a platform for the joint active work on water topics (e.g. writing of expert opinions, initiation of research associations); and
  • To develop career perspectives.

The division is distinguished by the diversity of its members working as/in:

  • Hydrogeologists
  • Hydrologists
  • Engineers
  • Associations of water experts
  • Water supply companies
  • Water agencies
  • Institutes and companies.

Work areas of the members
The work of the division members involves the following:

  • Investigating water, wastewater, sludge, sediments and soil;
  • Evaluating the quality of underground and aboveground water as groundwater, spring water, mineral- and thermal water, precipitation water, water in rivers, lakes and reservoirs as well as seawater;
  • Studying the state of water bodies and promoting the protection of water bodies including the organisms and sediments therein;
  • Processing and utilizing water as drinking water, mineral water, healing water, plant water for industries and power plant units, bathing water in indoor- and outdoor swimming pools;
  • Dealing with the treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater; and
  • In-plant measures for water saving, for water recycling and resource recovery in waste management.

Tasks of the Water Chemistry Society

The Water Chemistry Society has the following agenda:

  • To support scientific work in the field of water: Researching the scientific fundamentals and their application;
  • To advance water-chemistry education at German universities and to support young scientists;
  • To cooperate with water governmental agencies, associations and water experts in Germany and abroad as well as with other GDCh-divisions;
  • To test, standardize and further develop analytical methods (Germany Standard Methods for Testing Water, Wastewater and Sludge (DEV)); and
  • To participate in national scientific, technical, legislative and organizational projects and measures of water-quality management.
